SHAH ALAM 13 Nov. - Pergerakan Pemuda UMNO tidak bersetuju dengan pandangan pihak tertentu yang menyatakan mahasiswa akan hilang tumpuan terhadap akademik sekiranya mereka diberi ruang dan kebebasan berpolitik.
Ketuanya, Khairy Jamaluddin berkata, penglibatan mahasiswa dalam politik sepatutnya dilihat secara positif kerana ia mampu membantu mereka berfikiran lebih kreatif dan kritis.
"Golongan pelajar universiti tidak seharusnya dilihat sebagai kumpulan yang anti-establishment, menentang kerajaan atau sebagainya.
"Kita berpandangan, kebebasan mahasiswa dalam berpolitik bukan bermakna mereka menentang kerajaan. Jika kebebasan itu diberikan, mereka sebenarnya mahu tampil bersama-sama dengan kerajaan untuk mengutarakan pandangan dalam pelbagai perkara," katanya kepada pemberita selepas merasmikan Pertandingan Pidato Politik Piala Perdana Menteri Peringkat Zon Tengah anjuran Unit Pidato Pemuda UMNO di sini hari ini.
Mengulas kenyataan Prof. Datuk Dr. Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar kelmarin yang menyatakan Akta Universiti dan Kolej Universiti 1971 (AUKU) tidak perlu dipinda, Ahli Parlimen Rembau itu berkata, ia adalah pandangan peribadi Naib Canselor Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) berkenaan.
Khairy berpendapat kekangan untuk terlibat dalam politik itu yang menyebabkan mahasiswa berasakan terpinggir dan tidak dapat bersama-sama dengan kerajaan.
"Walaupun ada antara golongan itu memberikan pandangan yang kritis, ia tidak bermakna mereka tidak menyokong dasar kerajaan dan aspirasi negara," katanya.
Khairy berkata, langkah memberi kebebasan kepada mahasiswa berpolitik juga tidak semestinya menyebabkan golongan itu mengabaikan matlamat utama mereka di universiti iaitu untuk mencari ilmu pengetahuan.
"Politik itu sendiri membantu membentuk pemikiran kreatif dan kritis dalam sesuatu disiplin ilmu. Saya juga percaya tidak semua pelajar berminat dalam politik.
"Sekiranya ada mahasiswa terlibat dalam politik, saya yakin dan faham mereka sebenarnya tahu keutamaan terhadap pengajian masing-masing," ujarnya.

Russian air force orders thrust-vectoring Su-30SM fighters

The Irkutsk Aircraft Plant(IAZ) is assembling twoSukhoi Su-30SM multirole fighters for the Russian air force, Alexey Fedorov, president of the controlling Irkut corporation, said. The pair will be completed and subjected to flight trials by the end of this year.

The new version of the twin-seat Su-30 represents the baseline Su-30MKI with thrust vectoring developed for the Indian air force, but with modifications to meet Russian air force specifications, Fedorov said.

The service is seeking to procure 30 such aircraft, with a contract still being finalised.

"Hopefully, in 2012 we will be able to finalise a contract for 18 Su-30SMs for the Russian air force, with an option for a further 18 for the Russian navy air arm," Fedorov said.

It is understood that the decision to procure the Su-30SM was inspired by the successful use of industry-owned Su-30MKI/MKM operational-standard prototypes during Russia's August 2008 conflict with Georgia.The delivery of the Su-30SM to the Russian armed forces will end a long pause in their acquisition of IAZ-built fighters, after its last Su-30K interceptors and Su-27UB twin-seat operational trainers were handed over in the early 1990s.

Rosoboronexport, the Russian state arms export agency, has delivered the first party of four Sukhoi-30MK2 fighter jets to Vietnam.

This was reported by Sergey Kornev, the head of the Rosoboronexport delegation to the Paris Air Show 2011 in Le Bourget. Speaking about the share of aircraft in the general volume of Russian arms export, Kornev pointed out that the largest consumers of Russian combat aircraft are India, Algeria and Vietnam.

Vietnam is to buy 20 Sukhoi-30MK2 in Russia within two contracts.

Seawalnya saya ingin berkongsi Firman Allah SWT, dalam surah As-Saff ayat yang ke-4

‘Sesungguhnya Allah menyukai orang-orang yang berjuang di jalanNya, dalam barisan yang teratur seakan-akan mereka seperti satu ‘bun-ya-nun-marsus’ yakni bangunan yang tersusun kukuh’.

Kemudiannya pesan daripada Saidina Ali bahawasanya :

‘Sesuatu yang benar dan hak NAMUN tidak tersusun, akan dikalahkan! oleh yang batil dan salah , tetapi! diatur dengan tersusun’

Tuan-Tuan dan Puan-Puan sekalian,

Pada petang berbahagia ini, saya bagi pihak Pemuda bahagian Ampang ingin memperkukuhkan saranan YAB Presiden UMNO sewaktu di Pilihanraya Sarawak yang lalu, YAB DS Najib dalam cadangan beliau dalam pemilihan calon untuk pilihanraya yang akan datang ini.

DS Najib menyatakan bahawa Calon-Calon dari Barisan Nasional haruslah dari “winnable candidate” dan bukannya lagi cara pemilihan tradisi iaitu secara quota dari komponen-komponen parti seperti dahulu. Kita juga mengerti, ini adalah perjanjian diantara parti2 komponen didalam barisan nasional, TETAPI, kami Pemuda Ampang ingin menyarankan kepada pihak Majlis Tertinggi UMNO untuk mengkaji semula system ini.

Kita tahu, ada kawasan-kawasan yang majoritas nya penduduk berbangsa Melayu tetapi disebabkan system kuota, calon yang dikemukakan oleh Barisan Nasional adalah dari parti MCA, MIC, Gerakan atau PPP yang bukan berbangsa Melayu. Barisan Nasional yang diketuai oleh UMNO terpaksa mengemukakan calon-calon yang mempunyai harapan tipis untuk menang di kawasan-kawasan ini kerna perjanjian system kuota.

Sedangkan parti pembangkang itu mengemukan calon mereka dari PAS ataupun PKR yang berbangsa Melayu. Ini jelas Tuan2 dan Puan2…. Dengan sokongan yang berkurangan dari masyarakat “urban” bukan melayu terhadap Barisan Nasional, kita terus menutup peluang yang ada untuk kita meraihkan kemenangan.

Tuan2 dan Puan2…

Pilihanraya besar adalah sangat berbeda dari pilihanraya-pilihanraya kecil yang kita menang sebelum ini seperti di Hulu Selangor, Tenang, Merlimau dan Kerdau oleh kerana jentera-jentera pilihanraya akan berpecah dan tidak bertumpu kepada satu2 kawasan sahaja. Oleh itu, adalah sangat penting calon yang dikemukakan adalah calon citarasa lokal.

Walau Bagaimanapun, setelah CALON dipilih…. Kita sebagai akar umbi harus lah juga akur kepada pemilihan calon dari pucuk pimpinan Tertinggi UMNO. Jangan kerana Pilihan itu bukan dari pemimpin pilihan kita, kita tidak keluar untuk menyokong calon tersebut. Ini sering terjadi dan harus lah kita elakkan dari berlaku kerana yang rugi adalah kita sendiri. Kita juga harus percaya pilihan kepimpinan itu adalah yang terbaik dan Kita harus menerima keputusan peringkat Tertinggi dan menyokong padu agar UMNO terus menang dan memerintah Malaysia.

Tuan2 dan Puan2

Ini adalah diantara sebab utama kita kalah di Perak, Pulau Pinang dan terutamanya di Negeri Selangor pada pilihanraya yang lalu… Pemuda Ampang ingin menyarankan kepada Pihak Majlis Tertinggi untuk mendengar suara akar umbi dan mengambil iktibar dari pilihanraya yang lepas agar pisang tidak berbuah dua kali. UMNO sebagai Parti Utama di dalam Barisan Nasional harus lebih mengutamakan kemenangan agar kita berada di tapuk pemerintahan di Negara ini. Tidak ada gunanya sekiranya kita mengikut sistem kuota tetapi Negara tergadai kepada parti pembangkang.

Pihak Pemuda Ampang juga ingin mencadangkan kepada Pihak Majlis Tertinggi agar calon-calon untuk pilihanraya yang akan datang ini dapat sekiranya mengemukakan lebih ramai calon2 yang muda, terdiri dari kalangan Pemuda dan Puteri UMNO agar lapisan pelapis di peringkat Negeri dan Parlimen lebih mantap.. Tetapi ini bukanlah bermaksud Pemuda Ampang melupai barisan veteran yang menpunyai pengalaman yang lebih luas di dalam arena politik Negara.

Si badut PKR bersorak lagi,

Ferrari Merah kesukaan Azmin Ali,

September enam belas yang dijanji-janji,

Akhirnya menangis di malam hari,

Anak cina di belai-belai,

Anak melayu diterkam belakang,

Anwar berceramah berderai-derai,

Seperti pak kaduk asyik bertukang.

Semua kawan menjadi lawan,

Zahrin, Chandra, Nalla dan Eskay,

Video tulen 'barang' menawan,

Cukup marah dikatakan GAY.

Buai laju-laju,

Sampai ke pucuk sena,

Anjing Gila datang dari Batu,

Yang Berhormat Tian Chua namanya…

Cukup cukup lah wahai si Anwar,

Bawak bertaubat sebelum terlambat,

Jangan sentiasa membuat onar,

Nanti di Sungai Buloh, pasti kita sebat.

Tuan-Tuan dan Puan-Puan yang saya hormati sakalian,

Isu kedua yang mahu di bentangkan oleh Pemuda Ampang adalah isu IPP ataupun Independent Power Plant dan isu subsidi diesel dan gula kepada rakyat. Pengurungan subsidi diesel dan gula kepada rakyat adalah tidak seberapa berbanding dengan subsidi Gas yg di berikan kepada syarikat2 IPP swasta ini.

Majlis Tertinggi harus mengambil peduli tentang penjimatan tahunan berjumlah RM226.8 juta dari pengurangan subsidi diesel dan pengurangan subsidi gula yang berjumlah RM116 juta tetapi bukan subsidi gas yang berjumlah RM26 bilion tahun ini dalam kedua-dua sektor janakuasa dan bukan janakuasa.

Kadang-kadang kita bimbang untuk membelanjakan sejumlah wang kecil, walhal sembarangan membelanjakan sejumlah wang yang sangat besar. Hal ini merupakan tindakan yang nampak cerdik tetapi sebenarnya tidak. Seperti perpatah inggeris…

“A panny wise, A pound foolish”

Sehingga akhir tahun 2010, Petronas telah menambah sejumlah RM131.3 bilion subsidi gas dalam kedua-dua sektor janakuasa dan bukan janakuasa, di mana penerima faedah adalah para IPP. Di antara IPP tersebut, YTL Power yang memiliki keuntungan pada tahun 2010 melebihi RM1.6 bilion ke atas nilai pendapatan berjumlah RM13 bilion. Pada tahun 2009, Malakoff memiliki keuntungan RM380 juta ke atas nilai pendapatan RM5.6 bilion. Manakala Powertek pula menikmati nilai pendapatan berjumlah 1.34 bilion dengan keuntungan sebanyak RM450 juta.

Adakah 'Independent Power Producers' (IPPs) masih menikmati keuntungan besar tanpa subsidi gas berjumlah RM131.3 bilion dan Perjanjian Pembelian Tetap Kuasa dengan Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)?

Pemuda Ampang mengesa pihak Majlis Tertinggi untuk menyelesaikan perkara ini sebelum mengurangkan subsidi petrol RON 95 kerana kami percaya ini sedikit sebanyak akan menjadi satu isu yang sangat besar kerana minyak adalah barangan ruji di peringkat akar umbi dan menjadi “domino effect” kepada harga barang2 runcit yang lain… dan boleh menghilangkan sokongan rakyat kepada Kerajaan Barisan Nasional.

Tuan-Tuan dan Puan-Puan,

Marilah kita bersatu dan jangan lah kita bersengketa sesama sendiri… Seperti yang diperkatakan oleh Kekanda Safarizul tempoh hari, peperangan itu diluar dan bukannya disini… kalau jaguh, ayuh kita bersama hadapi mereka ini di pilhanraya ke tiga belas nanti….

Yakinlah Tuan2 dan Puan2, perjuangan kita adalah perjuangan yang betul, yakinlah, perjuangan kita adalah perjuangan yang haq. Kitalah, UMNO, satu-satunya parti yang membawa obor harapan Bangsa Melayu!!!

Walau apa pun dugaan, walau apa pun rintangan, bersama segunung harapan, perjalanan ini kita teruskan, bersama menggenggam keyakinan, segala impian pasti dilunaskan.

Tradisi tetap kita junjung, perubahan tetap kita zahirkan.

Kendati tergantung awan di langit,

Telah terlanjur kubentangkan layar,

Walau badai datang menggulung,

PAS dan video seks ‘Anwar Ibrahim’

Perjuangan PAS sebagai sebuah “hizbullah” adalah berlandaskan hukum-hukum Allah swt. Sayugia, PAS menentang segala bentuk fitnah dan zina. Pendedahan video seks membabitkan Anwar Ibrahim boleh ditakrifkan sebagai fitnah zina.

Jika video itu palsu, sebuah fitnah telah direkacipta untuk menganiaya Anwar Ibrahim. Jika video itu benar, Anwar Ibrahim telah melakukan zina. Hitam atau putih, tiada ruang untuk kelabu.

Isu video seks ini meletakkan PAS di persimpangan jalan. Isu ini sudah semestinya menguji keikhlasan PAS sebagai sebuah parti yang memperjuangkan syariat Islam. Setakat ini pendirian pucuk pimpinan PAS masih kabur dan samar mengenai isu ini. Pada waktu sama tiada juga tindakan pro-aktif oleh pemimpin-pemimpin PAS untuk menentukan kesahihan video tersebut.

PAS sepatutnya atas inisiatif sendiri merujuk kepada pakar-pakar video untuk menentukan kesahihan video tersebut yang kini telah tersebar meluas. Begitu juga teknologi canggih seperti pengecaman-muka perlu digunakan untuk mengenalpasti pelaku dalam video itu.

Segala usaha-usaha ini bebas dari apa-apa yang dilakukan oleh pihak-pihak lain. Ianya semata-mata untuk membantu pemimpin-pemimpin PAS membuat keputusan yang tepat dan bijak. Sambil memohon kepada Allah swt untuk memberi petunjuk, segala kepakaran yang sedia ada perlu digunakan untuk memberi penentuan.

Berserah kepada Allah swt tetapi unta masih perlu ditambat juga!

Sebaliknya, apa yang dilihat umum ialah pemimpin-pemimpin PAS mengeluarkan kenyataan yang bercanggah-canggah. Mursyidul Am yakin Anwar tidak melakukan zina. Nik Aziz membuat kenyataan tanpa menonton video tersebut. Setiausaha Agung menyeru supaya menunggu keputusan siasatan polis. Mustafa Ali pula membuat kenyataan setelah dikatakan menonton video tersebut.

Pasukan polis yang menjadi rujukan Mustafa Ali adalah pasukan polis yang dilabel oleh PAS sebagai tidak adil dan tidak bebas.

Dalam masa yang sama, pemimpin-pemimpin PAS bersikap seolah-olah isu ini tidak wujud. Calon Timbalan Presiden, Mohamad Sabu pada satu sidang media telah menyatakan tidak akan melayan soalan-soalan mengenai video tersebut.

Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pemilihan PAS, Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman pula menyatakan bahawa muktamar PAS 2011 tidak akan membincang isu video seks. Ada pemimpin-pemimpin PAS yang sanggup menjadi burung unta yang lebih selesa menimbus kepala dalam pasir.

Sama ada mendapat restu atau tidak dari pucuk pimpinan PAS, ahli-ahli PAS dan rakyat biasa tetap akan membincang isu video seks.

Implikasi isu ini amat getir bukan hanya kepada keutuhan PAS sebagai sebuah “hizbullah” tetapi rakyat Malaysia turut, khususnya orang melayu, akan berpecah belah.

Yang membuat akar umbi PAS dan penyokong-penyokong Pakatan Rakyat amat gusar, lebih dari kandungan video tersebut, ialah tindak-tanduk Anwar setelah pendedahan dibuat. Banyak persoalan yang timbul:

Mengapa Anwar tidak mengumumkan identiti alibi-alibi beliau?

Mengapa penjelasan Anwar tentang ketidakhadirannya dalam ruang “Twitter” pada masa video dirakam amat mengelirukan?

Mengapa tidak ditunjukkan kepada umum jam Omega, jam yang dikatakan oleh Anwar dan Wan Azizah masih disimpan oleh Wan Azizah?

Mengapa tidak membuat sumpah laknat?

Mengapa tidak membuat ujian “polygraph”?

Mengapa tidak merujuk kepada pakar-pakar yang profesional dan bebas tentang kesahihan video tersebut?

Mengapa Anwar tidak menyaman malu individu-individu yang membuat pendedahan?

Mengapa Anwar gagal untuk mengesahkan persahabatan beliau dengan Eskay Abdullah?

Tindak-tanduk Anwar tidak mencerminkan kewibawaan beliau sebagai seorang pemimpin yang bijak menangani sebarang krisis.

Jika sah video tersebut palsu, PAS wajib mengembelingkan segala tenaga untuk menghukum pihak pemfitnah. Dataran Merdeka akan bertukar menjadi Dataran Tahrir.

Tidak cukup bumi untuk pemfitnah melarikan diri. PAS secara “default” akan menjadi pemimpin kepada sebuah gerakan massa yang memperjuangkan kebenaran dan keadilan.

Jika sah video tersebut benar, PAS wajib menyisihkan seorang penzina. PAS akan dianggap sebagai satu parti politik yang berprinsip kerana sanggup mengenepikan kepentingan politik demi menegakkan hukum Allah swt.

Sekaligus membuat parti-parti politik yang mengamalkan resam “matlamat menghalalkan cara” kelihatan kerdil bagai melukut di tepi gantang.

Isu video seks Anwar Ibrahim bukanlah satu musibah tetapi satu rahmat kepada PAS. Inilah peluang keemasan untuk PAS membuktikan ia benar-benar sebuah “hizbullah’. PAS sebenarnya kini berada dalam keadaan “menang-menang”.

Why I work and stay overseas — A Bumi

MAY 19 — I am a Malay working overseas. I find working in Malaysia unattractive due to the following reasons. I don’t want to belabour the points, so I list them down in point form:

Chinese chauvinism/racism

• Most private organisations including TMI are dominated by the Chinese and/or their political agenda.

• Chinese people have a tendency to assign negative stereotypes on other races (especially the Bumiputera races).

• They exhibit cliquish, insular, secretive and calculating behaviour.

• Chinese people favour fair-skinned people even though fair skin is disadvantageous in Malaysia’s sunny climate.

• They admire China’s achievements, despite China’s oppressive regime.

• Malaysian Chinese use the Chinese languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien etc.) to isolate their discussion from others while in their presence.

• The Chinese are not honest about failures of ethnic Chinese leaderships in Philippines and Thailand.

• Tokenism is rife in Chinese companies.

• Chinese will use changing criteria to judge people of other ethnicities; one day it is academic merit, another day it may be “character.”

• The Chinese favour their own kind over others, even when other kinds are of equal stature.

• Malays fear to voice out against Chinese for fear of repercussions especially with respect to their employment prospects in the private sector.

• The Chinese still hold strongly to their ethnic heritage.

• They diminish the achievement of other races, especially the Malays.

• Harp on Bumiputera affirmative action even though Chinese people still continue to succeed at all levels of Malaysian life (even government).

• Any Malay who has strong academic background is denounced as attaining it due to “Bumiputera privilege”, even though he graduated overseas with his own money.

• Use their overseas Chinese connection to gain unfair advantage, but pretend the advantage is minimal.

• The Chinese always make unfair comparisons of Malaysia with other non-Muslim, post-industrial countries.

• Chinese people don’t recognise the special position Islam has in Malaysia.

• Enjoy talking bad about Malaysia (even when working/living overseas) as if Malaysia is on the same level as Zimbabwe even though Malaysia is far from it.

• Highly critical of institutions that are Bumiputera-dominated (ie. government), but non-critical of institutions that are Chinese dominant (like gambling).

• Show no desire to partake in patriotic activities (e.g. serve in army), but cry foul when other people point out their lack of patriotism.

• Show lack of understanding about Islamic religion, but enjoy taking Quranic verses out of context to further their argument.

• If pushed to think “outside the box”, the Chinese would favour Western ideals above Islamic ideals.

• The Chinese show lack of respect toward Malay leaders, but accord unnecessary respect to their Chinese community leaders, even though they hold no significant position in government.

• Always speak about “brain drain” but still keep Malaysian passports.

• Willing to spread disingenuous claim that Bumis have already achieved economic parity with the Chinese.

• Use Indians who have achieved to further their claim that Indian community is ahead of the Malay community.

• Comments in support of Chinese chauvinistic agenda are allowed to be posted in TMI, while others are censored.

• I can go on and on with more example, but I grow tired and annoyed.

PAS religionism

• Holds only their interpretation of Islam to be the truth.

• Willing to associate themselves with and be used by non-Muslims while creating enmity toward other Muslims.

• Use religion as a political tool to win arguments and foment discord.

• Ritualistic mentality.

• Have a simplistic idea/concept of the world and its affairs.

Umno nationalism

• Partake in bully politics.

• Enjoy seeing minor issues such as sexual improprieties take over the national discourse.

• Willing to give in to fervent Malay nationalism.

• Must “ampu” within Umno hierarchical structure to get to higher positions.

• Anti-intellectualism.

• Unwillingness to adapt and change to satisfy changing political climate.

Indian shiftiness

• Willing to change their allegiance due to changing political tide.

• Belief that Indian subcontinent will help them, like mainland China helps Malaysian Chinese.

• Dishonest about their caste and other internal problems.

Malaysian culture as a whole

• No proper understanding of logic and reason.

• Has not understood to segregate religious thinking from secular reasoning.

• Lost sensitivities towards other religions/races.

• Still admire Western culture, without studying their obvious weaknesses.

• Always sidetracked by minor issues rather than seeing bigger picture.

• Media not mature to show all sides of the story, media is all very partisan.

• Partisanship is being promoted at all levels from the family microcosm to the national level.

FEB 2 — As expected, the BN has not only won the Tenang state by-election, but it has also successfully stricken another blow to the Pakatan Rakyat’s morale with an increased majority of 3,707 votes, 1,215 votes higher than the total votes it won in the 2008 general election.

The Pakatan Rakyat blamed the bad wet weather in Tenang on the polling day and the low turnout rate of Chinese voters for its loss and the increased majority gained by the BN.

However, based on the by-election results last year, the Pakatan Rakyat’s bigger loss of votes this time did not happen by accident. It should not be considered as an isolated incident either.

In last year’s Hulu Selangor and Galas by-elections, the BN was expected to lose as it had been defeated by the PKR and PAS respectively in the 2008 general election. However, the BN won both by-elections. As in the Batu Sapi by-election, the majority had increased by 2,651 votes and now, the BN also gained increased majority in Tenang. It reflected that the 2008 political tsunami has subsided, and the Pakatan Rakyat has failed to break the BN stronghold.

The BN has won four of the five by-elections last year. There are many factors, including the strength, morale, performance and strategies of both the BN and the Pakatan Rakyat.

Right after he took over the office as the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak has introduced the 1 Malaysia concept and actively promoted the Government Transformation Plan (GTP), Economic transformation Programme (ETP), Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and the National Key Result Areas (NKRA). Najib has also changed the low efficiency impression of the Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi administration and earned extra points for the BN.

In addition, the internal unity of Umno has also laid a foundation for the retrieve of Malay votes.

As for the Pakatan Rakyat, it has been trapped in chaos, with particularly the PKR. Many of the PKR lawmakers and members have quit the party and its first direct party election had also triggered various controversies.

The performance of th Pakatan Rakyat state governments has not been generally very impressive, with the exception of perhaps the free water in Selangor and the senior citizen scheme in Penang. Some of their measures are obviously for image-building rather than serving the people. Besides, there are conflicts among state government members in terms of concepts. For example, the DAP and PAS hold different views on the recruitment of Muslim workers at places selling alcohol.

The continuous problems occur in the Pakatan Rakyat have caused rational swing voters to think whether the alternative coalition has the ability to govern the country. The Pakatan Rakyat had not been formed when the 2008 general election was held and most people voted for the opposition just to vent their anger. Three years later, some voters have decided to opt for the establishment, and this is what the Pakatan Rakyat should be concerned about.

The Pakatan Rakyat should consolidate its grassroots organisation and civil society networks while fighting for the trust of the non-Malays and Orang Asli, including finding a way to reach reclamation, rural and long house areas. It would be too late to speculate issues only during elections.

The dispute over the flow of Chinese votes in the Tenang state by-election between the DAP and the MCA is meaningless as Chinese votes alone would not be able to reverse the overall situation. The DAP is a non-racial party while the Pakatan Rakyat is taking a multi-racial line and thus, they should not be over dependent on Chinese votes.

Even if the Pakatan Rakyat is able to retain or increase Chinese votes, it should not be too excited as the fact is that it is the Malay and Indian votes who have returned to the BN. The Pakatan Rakyat was able to gain 72 per cent of Chinese votes in the Hulu Selangor by-election but it still failed to win the election. So what even if the support rate increases to 80 per cent?

In such a situation, the BN is expected to win again in the coming Merlimau by-election with only 21 per cent of Chinese voters. Racially mixed constituencies have now become a nightmare for the Pakatan Rakyat.

Would the next general election still far away after the BN has gained a victory in the Tenang by-election? For sure, the BN is now having more confidence to face the Sarawak state election and this is another warning sign for the Pakatan Rakyat. — mysinchew.com

Malaysia is Tanah Melayu, says Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told Malaysians today to admit that the country belonged to the Malays and accept the culture and language of the dominant community.

The former prime minister said that country’s forefathers gave the Chinese and Indians citizenship because they expected the communities to respect Malay sovereignty.

“This country belongs to the Malay race. Peninsular Malaysia was known as Tanah Melayu but this cannot be said because it will be considered racist.

“We must be sincere and accept that the country is Tanah Melayu,” he told an audience at the “Malay race and the future” talk at the Tun Hussein Onn Memorial here.

Dr Mahathir also stressed that non-Malays must accept the concept of “Bangsa Malaysia” (Malaysian nation) to help strengthen national unity.

He said the communities must place country before race and identify themselves as Malaysians.

He said if the communities continue to identify themselves according to the country of origin then it is an admission that they are immigrants in the country.

Dr Mahathir said that all races must accept that they are from “Bangsa Malaysia” to allow better co-operation from the different races and guarantee the future of the country.

He added that Malays will feel less threatened if the country adopts the concept of “Bangsa Malaysia”.

“(Former Philippine President Corazon) Cory Aquino is Chinese but she identified herself as a Filipino. (Former Thai Prime Minister) Thaksin Shinawatra is Chinese but he speaks the Thai language and lives the Thai culture.

“It is different in Malaysia, we still introduce ourselves according to our race. This is why the question of race will continue to haunt us,” he said.

He said the race affirmative programmes such as the New Economic Policy (NEP) were still important as the Malays were still weak economically.

“We must not reject every government effort to help us. We must push away the crutches and realise that we are still limping.

“Which is better? To be dependent on policies which will save us or depend on others hoping that they will save us? Sooner or later, we will be under their rule,” he said.

He said the Malay community may risk losing the country without the affirmative action policies.

“When we are weak that means we will lose power even if we are still the prime minister but we will no longer have any power because we will dependent on others,” he added.

Dr Mahathir has been criticised for mocking proponents of meritocracy, calling them racist and decried Malays who support meritocracy as having misplaced pride.

In his blog, he blasted advocates of meritocracy, calling them “meritocrats” pushing for dominance by one race in all aspects of the country and that the campaign for meritocracy was not a campaign against racism but a movement by racists against racists.

Dr Mahathir’s remarks were seen as an attack on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia and the New Economic Model (NEM), both of which promote national unity and meritocracy.

Today, he continued the tirade against 1 Malaysia and said that his Vision 2020 differed because it wants to create an inclusive national identity.

“When we say 1 Malaysia, people will think equality among all races. For the Malays, equality means abolishing vernacular schools.

“But for the Chinese and Indians, 1 Malaysia means to abolish the rights of the Malay people,” he said.

He said the administration must be clear on what is 1 Malaysia.

In a poll conducted by Merdeka Review last year, only 39 per cent of non-Bumiputeras accepted the 1 Malaysia concept despite the fact that it had been introduced for over a year.

Forty-six per cent out of 3,141 respondents interviewed felt that 1 Malaysia was only a “tactic to win over non-Malay support” while another 16 per cent had either refused to answer the poll questions or claimed to have no understanding of the concept whatsoever.

Respondents were undecided on whether Malaysia had become more united under the Najib administration, with 48 per cent saying “yes” and 43 per cent claiming that the country was still disunited.

Veteran Umno politician and one-time Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah also agreed and said that the 1 Malaysia slogan was “hollow” and had lacked direction and vision and even compared it to Dr Mahathir’s Vision 2020.
