PENANG, 13 FEB 2010: The Penang government has refuted claims that the 'Maulidur Rasul' (Prophet Muhammad's birthday) procession will not be held this year. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government did not make any announcements on the 'Maulidur Rasul' procession which was held annually. "I am surprised by the false statement as the state government and Islamic Department have planned several 'Maulidur Rasul' programmes since three months ago," he told reporters here today. Meanwhile, Islamic Affairs Committee Chairman Abdul Malik Abdul Kassim said the birthday celebration will start with reading of yasin and tahlil in all mosques on Feb 25. Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas will also attend the function. On Feb 26, Deputy Chief Minister 1 Mansor Othman will launch the 'Maulidur Rasul' procession at 7am at Padang Kota Lama and will end at Dewan Seri Pinang. Other activities lined-up are the gathering of Muslims at Dewan Sri Pinang and the Islam civilisation exhibition with cooperation of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the State Mufti Department. The 'Forum Perdana' talk show will mark the climax of the celebration. The state government will for the first time organise reading of 'Kitab Shameil', a holy text on the life of Prophet Muhammad, at Masjid Negeri on Feb 27 and 28. The session from 8.30am to 5pm is expected to be attended by more than 1,000 people. Those interested can register with Masjid Negeri from now. |
