Jangan biar Melayu dihina!

Benarlah kata Tun Mahathir Mohamad bahawa Melayu mudah lupa.

The New Malay Dilemma

Najib’s Dilemma: PERKASA

March 8, 2010
http://www.asiasentinel.com

Written by Our Correspondent
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak needs an economic policy but that unfortunately will offend a major part of his constituency. He apparently has decided that taking the wraps off his long-awaited New Economic Model, as he calls it, is politically too dangerous for now.
According to local media, although Najib who doubles as Malaysia’s  Finance Minister had been scheduled to introduce his new policy at the end of March, it is apparently off till June and he may not even introduce it himself, letting someone else take the heat.
Najib appears to be caught in a trap of his own, with a widening gap between what he would like to do as an economist and what a major chunk of his United Malays National Organization (UMNO) constituency wants.
What they want is not only to not forward but to repeal the limited reforms he has already put in place, and they are increasingly angry about it. That is playing havoc with his so-called 1Malaysia campaign, designed to bring the country’s fractious ethnic groups together and rebuild the flailing national ruling coalition.
One pessimistic aide to a prominent UMNO politician told Asia Sentinel it is even possible that UMNO could be superseded by a growing organization of 80-odd Malay superiority non-governmental organizations cobbled together in recent weeks under the title Malay Consultative Council, which is seeking to push the government to maintain so-called Ketuanan Melayu, or Malays First, a slogan embraced by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who remains active at age 84 and despite his endorsement of Najib is a growing thorn in the Prime  Minister’s side, as he was with his predecessor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, whom he helped to drive from power.
Mahathir appears to be shifting to the right to make an alliance with the rightists, according to longtime political observers in Kuala Lumpur.
In order to modernize, Malaysia, a country of 28 million people, needs to do away with a wide variety of subsidies and perks to ethnic Malays that are enshrined in the New Economic Policy, an affirmative action plan for ethnic Malays that was put in place in 1971 in the wake of disastrous 1969 ethnic riots that took the lives of hundreds of people on both side of the racial divide. The NEP supposedly ended in 1991 and a new National Development Policy was put in its place. It was largely the NEP under a different name. The NDP initials never took off. It is still called the NEP.
Among other things, the NEP was designed to give ethnic Malays 30 percent ownership of private companies, which led to what has been called an “Ali Baba” system, in which “Alis” – ethnic Malays, or bumiputeras – became the figurehead owners or chief executives of companies actually run and owned through by “babas” – the nickname for Straits-born Chinese. The Ali Baba title, of course, brings to most people’s minds the title of the tale “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.”
Non-Malays are largely shut out of the university system and overseas scholarships. Malays are given ownership of government-linked public company shares and housing. As a result, the NEP is held responsible for creating a rentier system in which some – particularly top officials of UMNO –became rich overnight by skimming the share ownership while the average Malay in the kampung, or rural village, got very little. The education system has suffered because bumiputeras are largely passed through the system with very low standards.
The country has also been afflicted by both a problem with capital flight and a brain drain as reported by Asia Sentinel, with Najib acknowledging that anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 professionals are working abroad, about 40 percent of them in Singapore, which actively recruits ethnic Chinese students in Malaysia.
Both Mahathir and Badawi talked incessantly about the need to create a high-growth economy built on technology and industrialization, Mahathir by establishing the so-called multimedia super corridor and the national car, the Proton, as well as a long series of other projects, many of which were largely unsuccessful. Badawi sought to attract investment in high-tech industries including pharmaceuticals and medical technology as well as bio-science. But many economists argue that without removing the impediments of the NEP, Najib will be as unsuccessful as his predecessors.
Najib first talked about a new economic plan a year ago, but its introduction has been pushed back several times. Even as late as Feb. 8, during a two-day conference in Kuala Lumpur, Najib told reporters that his administration is open to suggestions for what would go into the policy. Principal elements are expected to be the removal of subsidies and further liberalization of the economy that appear certain to bite into Malay privilege. Many of Najib’s cabinet want nothing to do with the plan, concerned that the voter rebellion that began in disastrous March 2008 elections will grow.
The Malay NGOs are streaming into a perceived political vacuum for Malay ultranationalists, according to a source in Kuala Lumpur. No one really knows at this point how strong they are despite the noise they are making.  There has been no independent polling. They are feeling marginalized by Najib’s centrist politics and would like to take the country back to the days of absolute UMNO rule, the course say. So they remain frustrated and angry.
Any time word gets around that the fundamentals of the NEP are being tampered with, UMNO politicians rush to the microphones to say it isn’t true. Mukhriz Mahathir, the former premier’s son and a Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister in Najib’s government, for instance, was the latest to insist to reporters that the new policy “is in line with previous policies particularly the New Economic Policy.”
Najib has repeatedly said the country is confronted by a new reality, given the stagnating economy, which shrank by 3.3 percent in 2009 and faces relatively anemic 3.7 percent growth in 2010 and 5.0 percent in 2011. Last year, he removed a requirement mandating ethnic Malay participation in 27 economic sub-sectors as well as removing a requirement that 30 percent of shares in IPOs go to ethnic Malays.
That has played a major role in stoking ethnic Malay anger, although some observers say the leaders of the Malay Consultative Council are actually UMNO wheelhorses who fear the loss of their perks instead of the wider community.
One of the leaders of the Malay rights groups is an NGO called PERKASA, which is headed by an independent member of parliament named Ibrahim Ali, a long time Mahathir ally and former UMNO stalwart. It has been holding strident rallies across the country, demanding close adherence to the Malays-first policy.
Some pessimists say PERKASA members are trying to provoke the Chinese into a confrontation with the Malays that will result in the imposition of the country’s draconian Internal Security Act ISA. One Malay businessman told Asia Sentinel that “UMNO leaders who are not particularly sympathetic to its aims are climbing onto the speakers’ platforms to endorse them because they’re afraid not to.”
Others say they aren’t particularly concerned and that the Malay Consultative Council and its member organizations more resemble the Tea Party movement in the United States, which is loud, angry and vocal but which almost certainly will remain a splinter group.
Asked about the concern that the Malay Consultative Council would grow big enough to replace UMNO, and particularly PERKASA, a political analyst said that “PERKASA’s appeal is not broadly based. They may shout the loudest but it will take more than that to replace UMNO. UMNO needs other component parties in Barisan to sell their multiracial appeal. I doubt the component parties in Barisan Nasional can work with PERKASA as closely as UMNO.”

The future of Najibonomics

John Lee is a third-year student of economics at Dartmouth College in the United States. He has been thinking aloud since 2005 at infernalramblings.com.

commentary: John Lee is looking in Malaysian Economy from clinical point of view., an ivy league student, what so great about this joker, as i am also an ivy league graduate, i don't go around giving advise to the PM on how to run things....he is a dozen a dime now a days... I mean, it is easier for him to comment from the outside on how Najib's team handling things back home., Najib is handling it the best he could ever be, for that i commanded him, and also, this economy is actually just came out from the stagnant economic policy of Abdullah Badawi...but one thing I couldn't agree more is that Pak Lah is the very reason why our economy has basically gone down the drain., He single handedly chase away most of the potential FDI and undone all the economic policy that Dr. Mahathir had built in 22 years... to me, Pak Lah should be held responsible for all the economic spiral downward during the "dark ages" of his administration....

MARCH 1 — The more I learn about 1 Malaysia and the Najib Razak administration, the more convinced I am that this is all just another giant farce.
I cannot tell where this perception that Najib is more competent or principled than his predecessor is coming from.
1 Malaysia is all propaganda without results, and the actions of our government show it is more concerned with a good show rather than substance.
The latest propaganda triumph of the Najib regime is an impressive 4.5 per cent economic growth rate in the last quarter of 2009.
All well and good, but as Najib himself conceded, the growth was driven by unique conditions: the holiday season drove up consumer spending to a degree we cannot expect for the other three quarters of the year, and the government also ramped up its stimulus spending to boost aggregate demand.
This is not a sustainable economic recipe; it is not real, meaningful economic growth.
The government has been running deficits like mad for years, artificially boosting demand. Now, that is fine if we are doing it to keep pace with increasing aggregate supply.
Aggregate supply hinges on natural resources, technological innovation, and capital —both capital goods, and the more intangible human capital. And Najibonomics is a complete failure on the supply side, I can tell you right now.
In terms of capital, it is no secret that net investments in Malaysia are dropping off a cliff. Until about halfway through the Abdullah Badawi administration, net investment on an annual basis was hovering somewhere near zero—that is to say, foreign investments coming in roughly equaled Malaysian investments going out.
We want a positive level of saving and investment to boost our capital stock — but in the final years of the Badawi government, and now under Prime Minister Najib, we literally have seen investment drop off a cliff.
To put this in more concrete terms, what this means is that foreigners are refusing to invest in Malaysia, and Malaysians insist on investing their money overseas.
A back of the envelope calculation suggests that last year, Malaysians invested almost as much money in the entire Australian property market alone as foreigners invested in the whole of Malaysia.
Investors, both Malaysian and foreign, have completely lost confidence in our country — nobody wants to put money in Malaysia, and so our savings are flowing out of the country, instead of being invested in local enterprise.
Even if you don’t invest directly, you are still probably being screwed. The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), eschewing the best practices of most other public pension funds around the world, concentrates its investments solely in Malaysia, ensuring our employees’ pensions are subject to the risk of putting all their eggs in one single basket. Worse still, the Ministry of Finance manipulates the EPF portfolio at will to artificially prop up our stock market.
In other words, our financial markets are a farce built upon the farce of the EPF.
And speaking of economic farces, only about 10 per cent of working age Malaysians, or 1.5 million people, pay taxes. This isn’t because of massive tax evasion —  it’s because only 1 out of every 10 Malaysians even earns enough to qualify for the income tax.
Even if we assume every last one of these Malaysians is a professional, square that with the 500,000 Malaysian professionals overseas. One out of every four Malaysian professionals lives and works abroad —  our human capital stock stands at only 75 per cent of its full potential, and it is falling; last year, the emigration rate nearly doubled.
At home, our schools and universities are not training high-value workers, and our economy is distorted by rent-seekers.
When my father began working as an engineer thirty years ago, his salary was in the RM1,000 to RM2,000 range. That is still the case for a young engineer starting today—despite massive inflation and rising costs of living. Things are so bad that most of these young workers —  who by right should be skilled professionals, commanding high wages —  are not even eligible to pay income tax.
It’s no wonder people are losing faith in Malaysia. We have no plan to fix our fundamentals.
Our school system discourages innovation in favour of accepting orders from above; our economic system stifles entrepreneurship in favour of corrupt rent-seeking.
Our prosperity is pump-primed by petroleum and forestry — when we run out of these resources, without any human capital or meaningful industrial enterprises, our economy will collapse.
Instead of bravely confronting these realities, Prime Minister Najib is content to proclaim our recovery from the global recession — as if all will be nice and dandy now.
He should be announcing an ambitious policy to reverse our capital outflows, reduce our dependence on natural resources, and improve our human capital.
This is a crisis in the making —  with no investment, we cannot build up our industry, and with no human capital, we cannot compete in the knowledge economy; the problem goes beyond a short-term recession.
But these things do not concern Najib’s regime.
After all, this is a regime of propaganda, not results. The government under Najib now brazenly seizes books it doesn’t like from bookstores across the country. It blatantly rewrites history by contradicting Tengku Razaleigh, who helped draw up the original petroleum royalty agreements with the states.
There is no policymaking here—just propaganda.
The Barisan Nasional government is simply a ship of fools, content to lead us to disaster. They have no vision for the country, no idea of the massive challenges we face or any intention to face such challenges to begin with.
All this government does is pat itself on the back for putting on a good show. We deserve a government which lives in reality, not the neverland of 1 Malaysia. Why is this regime of “no action, talk only” supposed to be so much better than the alternatives?

TIGA PULUH JUTA BERGANTUNG PADA SATU LUBANG

commentary:  Hishamuddin Rais, well know as a student leader, together with Anwar during his University Malaya and also MCKK days... has been on the ISA list as far as i can remember...i am not surprise if he comes out something bias towards the opposition leader...well, his writing is something that you can read like the comic and horoscope section in the newspaper, as it is for entertainment only....

Hishamuddin Rais
Akhirnnya perbicaraan Anwar Ibrahim bermula.
Justeru, Pakatan Rakyat wajib ditumpaskan.  Satu konspirasi wajib diwujudkan sekali lagi. Khalas. Period. Finito. The End. Fin.
Manakala yang  dibelakang kamera pun masih orang-orang jahat yang lama. Ramai  orang-orang  jahat ini  hampir pencen tetapi mendapat talian hayat untuk membuat  ‘the last bottom show’.

Tiga puluh juta warga Malaysia wajib bersedia. Isi-isi dari lubang jubur ini akan bertaburan.  Ketawa salah hendak menangis pun kita tidak berair mata lagi.

Najib and Anwar: How do you explain to your children?

By Steadyaku47

“We cloak ourselves in cold indifference to the unnecessary suffering of others--even when we cause it.” James Carroll

I want to write today about a friend of mine - Anwar Ibrahim. About what he is going through now. About what personal pain he must be feeling in spite of the brave front that he puts for us all to see. About what he is going through as a father and husband. He is again living the nightmare he went through a decade ago. A nightmare that ended only after years of incarceration when he was pronounced innocent of sodomy. But that did not spare him the pain, the embarrassment and the humiliation of going through that first sodomy trial. Mahathir and Mahathir alone perpetuated that suffering. Mahathir is no longer Prime Minister. However God has not given Mahathir the grace to accept that he is no longer Prime Minister. Why God has not done so is for God to know. So maybe Mahathir really is to be pitied rather then reviled. We do know that God did not make UMNO leaders very bright either but even HE outdid HIMSELF when HE threw Najib Tun Razak into our midst.
In UMNO relentless search for power and great wealth we have been privy to many a scenario. The colossal road show pitting Mahathir against the Sultans. The sacking of Tun Salleh Abbas. The very public confirmation by UMNO’s own President of money politics  - invoking damnation and hell to those who practice it – a classic instance of the pot calling the kettle black! And a lot of good that did to UMNO! Huh!
We had to suffer the embarrassment of Mahathir babbling away teary eyed on stage for all to see because he knew  that it was time for him to go. Even he could no longer do anything about money politics in UMNO – so better to leave then be in the predicament that Najib and UMNO are now facing! Say what you like about Mahathir but in hindsight did he not engineer his exit at precisely the right moment? Give credit where credit is due I say!
And now Najib. I am not going to ask him how he sleeps at night after Altantuya. After pushing out Pak Lah. After Teoh Beng Hock. After Kugan. After PKFZ, after the death of the three innocent schoolgirls over the suspension bridge tragedy, even about his own sordid sexual past…..because in the privacy of your house doctors can give you medications - uppers or downers to manage your mental and physical state and still give you a good night sleep. So he sleeps ok at night. I am not going to ask him how he will face his maker when his time comes because hopefully for him, that is still a long way off and he still thinks that there will be time to wash his sins away.
But this I will ask of him. As a Father to Riza Shahriz,  Nooryana Najwa and Norashman how does he deal with his children’s queries about these things that are happening around them. Najib’s children are adults and educated enough to read, digest and think for themselves what is right and what is wrong. Their education, the best that money can buy, should enable them to make their own conclusion as to what Uncle Razak Baginda has done. If they can condone the Ringgit $500 million as commission for “services rendered” to our Nation that Najib has given to Razak’s – what about Razak’s Baginda’s keeping of Alatantuya as his mistress? What about her murder? What about the SMS that Najib send to Razak? What about the involvement of UTK in the murder? What about Bala’s statutory declaration about Najib’s connection with Altantuya? If anything I would like to believe that their education would give them the ability to conclude for themselves what is right and what is wrong. And I would also like to believe that they are educated enough to understand that the swearing by Najib on the Koran that he is innocent of Altantuya’s murder does not, and I repeat, does not, makes their father innocent of that crime. That, as any educated person understands, is for the court to decide.
So Najib, I ask you – have you sat down with Riza Shahriz,  Nooryana Najwa,  and Norashman to explain your part in the whole matter? Or have your family been conditioned to accept that in politics the ends justifies the means? And that is your excuse to them for hounding Anwar through the courts in the sodomy two trial. Your excuse for this disgraceful and shameful act of bringing another Father to disrepute and embarrassment in front of his children? You  know that Anwar is a father. A father with six children. He too, like you, will have need to explain to his children what is happening around them.
But then Anwar’s children know of their Father's commitment to help others less fortunate then him even before he joined UMNO. They have seen their Father imprisoned under ISA before he became the anointed successor to Mahathir. Then from being Deputy Prime Minister they have seen their Father taken away from them, from the sanctuary of their home by balaclava clad armed men and then hounded through a corrupt Judiciary by Mahathir for sodomy. Jailed and then finally vindicated. They have seen their father bashed black and blue by the Inspector General of Police. They have seen their father in Prison again – for a much longer period this time. And while he was in prison they grew up. They have seen their father come back from prison to become leader of the opposition. They have seen more than what any father would want their children to see of themselves in life and yet there is more.
Now Sodomy two. Najib do you think Anwar has to explain anything to them in as far as sodomy two is concern? Or are Anwar’s children already resolute and firm in their belief in the innocence of their Father and prepared for anything that you and your cohorts will throw at him – at them? And I am not even going to start about Azizah. Don’t anybody doubt Azizah’s ability to shoulder more then her share of bringing up that family and defending Anwar!
So again back to your family Najib. How do you deal with Riza Shahriz,  Nooryana Najwa and Norashman? The ends justifies the means? Huh! As for Rosmah I can only quote Bill Cosby who said “Let us now set forth one of the fundamental truths about marriage: the wife is in charge”. Camna?
